truly atmospheric prose, brilliant unreliable narrator. sinister, neurotic, hyper-surreal. not much plot but the novel unravels itself all the same

Tricky one to rate and I feel it’s a strong three. This is not an easy book, in fact, it’s very strange and you end up with more questions than answers by the end. However, it’s a good kind of strange with Jackson leaving it to the reader to drawn their own conclusions as to what is going on.

Every Shirley Jackson novel I read I love more than the last. No one writes interior monologue like Jackson, and her biting critiques of heteronormative culture are timeless. While the beat gen boys were publishing stream of consciousness diaries and riding privilege into the literary canon, Shirley Jackson was producing some of the most elegant prose ever written.

Deliciously weird with a breathless, bizarre ending. My second Shirley Jackson novel only makes me hungry for more.
