Something that I'm realizing while rereading this series is how little I cared for the earlier arcs. Not to say they're bad, there's nothing objectively wrong with them, but this volume finishes with the start of the The Beasts of Maze Castle arc and aside from the banter between Hiei and Kuwabara I straight up don't care. Maybe it's because I watched the anime for so many years on repeat that certain don't faze me anymore, but it's kind of disappointing finishing one arc, starting another, and not getting any emotional response.

That being said, there were some highlights from this volume. I never realized how well executed Rando was in terms of a demon stealing techniques; he used so many different kinds and was such a quick study too, definitely didn't give him enough credit when I initially watched his battle with Yusuke. As I said earlier, I love the banter between Hiei and Kuwabara and am looking forward to more as the arc progresses. Genkai is a boss, as usual, and I just love her so much even though she doesn't really do much in this volume.

Overall, not a bad volume, but I'm not enjoying this to the extreme degree that I thought I would. Maybe that'll change later, no clue, but I'll keep reading to see how things change.

I loved this volume. Kuwabara taking on the demon first!!!! No!!!! He has grown on me so much!!!! I was actually impressed with how they handled every fight in here now that this is no longer a goofy-slice-of-life story. The new storyline about Demon City is also fascinating. The Gate of Betrayal scene with the ceiling falling??? So nicely done. It reminded me of the best parts of watching Hunter x Hunter with my wife.

Great volume! Of course Yusuke wins, but Kuwabara’s aura sword was awesome.

My least favorite of the volumes I've read so far, but it does continue to be pretty fun and funny here and there. I especially like the exclamations Kuwabara and Yusuke make like (some are from previous volumes):
  • Holy Cheese!
  • What the hey!
  • Yoicks!
Really takes me back.

Besides these bits, I like Kuwabara and Urameshi fighting alongside each other. I don't think they would consider themselves friends, but allies seems like more like it. And we also have Kurama and Hiei on our journey through the Underworld. Kurama is nice boy as always, but Hiei feels much more standoffish. But we do have a nice moment with him. The boys are slowly leveling up and it's nice to see them improving and taking more difficult opponents on. I like the wacky solutions and the asides Togashi puts in. All in all, a fun time.
