Short but has so much to say, the mystery of Love is what’s it all about
It's a sad yet meaningful story. I praise it for the beauty of the language, it's a story that remains in you forever

Oscar Wilde is famous for his unconventional literary genius, therefore, a reader must be careful not to take his words at face value.
The story of the Nightingale and the Rose is not your usual fairy tale where there's a happy ending. In fact, if one examines the elements of the story closely, one will find out that the whole of it is a complete mockery of a fairy tale. That instead of a brave, steadfast prince, you have a dejected, fickle minded student; instead of a princess who is pure at heart, you have a daughter of a professor covetous of money and worldly materials. Then there is the irony of an animal (the nightingale) more capable of true love than men; the irony of education; particularly of Philosophy and Metaphysics—the student and daughter of a professor, both devoid of wisdom.
Most of the readers say that it is one of the saddest short stories they've ever read. While I do not refute this, there is certainly more to the story than meets the eye. Oscar Wilde is not wont to orthodoxy. One must always expect something more than what is apparent/literal.
