"Here indeed is the true lover," said the Nightingale. "What I sing of, he suffers - what is joy to me, to him is pain. Surely Love is a wonderful thing. It is more precious than emeralds, and dearer than fine opals. Pearls and pomegranates cannot buy it, nor is it set forth in the marketplace. It may not be purchased of the merchants, nor can it be weighted out in the balance for gold."

That is my new favorite quote.

I thought that finally, I would get an Oscar Wilde story that wasn't cynical and bitter. I was wrong. But this was still a beautiful story that almost made me cry. The Nightingale is the sweetest, most pure-hearted Oscar Wilde character I have ever read about. I'm mad, but also satisfied by this story. It's realistic, but sad.

I listened to this fairy tale in audio by a Greek YouTuber (link if anyone is interested https://youtu.be/8Fw0DJ-r1kE ) . The story is captivating and simple, centered around the meaning of true love. Be warned that this is a tragic fairytale and true love comes from the unexpected rather than the expected characters, it comes from sacrifice rather than romance. Oscar Wilde’s writing shines through once more.

I don't believe in love, and this short story is perfect for me to describe my lack of faith in it. I first read this story when I was ten. At that time I'd felt sorry for the nightingale. Now nine years later, I think the nightingale was very stupid.

This is a story about a boy who is in love with a girl, but she will not dance with him unless he brings her a red rose. However, the boy has no red roses in his garden and weeps over his bad luck. A little nightingale is touched by his cries and decides that she will find a red rose for him. The story tells of her sacrifice for the boy's love. It has a horrible ending that I hated.
