Borne was one of the best science fiction books I've ever listened to. I'm glad I for the audiobook, despite having a signed printed copy, because [the character] Borne's voice was so adorable. The narrator did so well. I listened to it nonstop almost.

If you had told me before I read this book that I would become obsessed with a sentient, alien but human-made plant? Thing? I wouldn’t have believed you but here we are. VanderMeer you’ve done it again- and you keep writing lesbians who don’t know they’re lesbians! What’s up with that? Wick is a he/him lesbian confirmed by me. I talked to Jeff, he told me.

It is rare to see an author get EVERYTHING right.
This is a perfectly rounded book.
The worldbuilding is complex but not more than required to tell this story. The characters and interpersonal relationships are meaningful and deeply human. The plot misses no opportunities and is exciting and satisfying. The writing is very clever and yet easy to read, a good combination, as it may draw more casual readers into the genre.
Borne is a very loveable character and their experience growing up is relatable and pitiable. They really deserved more love than they got.
My only criticism was that Rachel insisted on using male pronouns for them even though they were obviously genderless. As if that far into the future, gender-neutral pronouns would be that hard to come by. But this concern was lifted as the author addressed it in Borne's journal.
The ending was epic and satisfying and tragic and hopeful as only the best endings are. Also, the fanart is SO CUTE.
