Massive, but worth the time

This is a massive text veering between technology, psychology, economics, history, and philosophy. I admit my attention strayed depending on the perspective and I predict this would be the case for most readers. All things considered, I found it a good use of my time and a resource addressing a very important topic. While not a criticism, if you purchase this source, be prepared to invest some time.

some chapters were better than others, I specifically lost the thread a little bit around chapter 10, and part III was not as strong as parts I and II. very interesting overall though. I'll recommend widely. I agree with Zuboff's poli sci analysis but when she gets into psychology i find she gets a bit generalistic.

Det var en skjebnens ironi at jeg leste denne på Amazon-produktet Kindle og at Kindlen avgikk ved døden etter et dytt utfor en bassengkant da jeg var i gang med de siste kapitlene…

Be the friction.

Unnecessarily long, sometimes meandering, full of highly inaccessible language, all of which made reading this book feel like trudging through a waist-high puddle of wet concrete. If you can get through the writing, it’s interesting.

Some really interesting stuff in here and learned a lot but struggled with some of the denser theoretical parts and found the writing to be unnecessarily complex at times.

Her writing and listening to the audiobook wasn't easy. In the preface, she mentions that she would be writing in an essay format, so the writing was very academic, with heavy words. I did get used to it after awhile, and could process it while doing low tier chores. And because it was so text heavy, it did take me a bit longer to take in and finish.

But I found deep insight nonetheless, and had not realize the extent of the surveillance that was going on behind the scenes. She provided plenty of examples and a call to action at the conclusion.

For the consumer, or someone who wants to understand more about surveillance capitalism outside of the Netflix documentary, Social Dilemma, this book provides much deeper insight.
