Jemisin managed to make her world and characters ten times more complex, when I already thought they were rich with depth at the end of the first one. Incredible speculative fiction and character writing

The dedication reads "To those who have no choice but to prepare their children for the battlefield." Yeah, this one gets wrenching. It doesn't have the same kind of "Oh. OHHHH." revelations of the first book, but you see Essun through some very different eyes. Things happen. Stages are set.
