If you love folklore and slow burn horror, I cannot recommend this enough. Go into this book blind and let the story take you. By the last page, I had full body chills and will definitely be staying in the light.

I was very intrigued by the book. I am always looking for new horror authors and this sounded really interesting. Unfortunately I found it a bit meandering. Often the tension would build and build just to fizzle out. It was pretty frustrating. I wish the middle had been a bit longer and a bit more tense. The ending was pretty cool though.

Well this surprised me. At first I found it very hard to get into and a little on the slow side, but it hit a certain point where that very quickly went to the other extreme and I was really enjoying it. But as it was seemingly resolving and the action was slowing down, there was still half the book left. Like just as you were getting ready for it to end there was a whoops jk here's a completely new section of plot. It wasn't a bad thing, I did really enjoy the second half and all the twists, it just felt a little odd to me. Again, not really a criticism, just a thing I noticed :)

One other thing is that I would've liked a little more spooky atmosphere from the forest itself, but that's just a person thing.

Overall it was a pretty great book with a really cool concept

The writing was lovely but a bit sparse, which I think works for the theme. I thought the characters were decently fleshed out for a horror story. A lot of times newer authors will simply make placeholders to kill off for shock value or sympathy points.

I did appreciate how
all the male characters died. Thank you for the self awareness about horror tropes.
I think this was refreshing to see in a horror novel.

I can't say I appreciated the ending. It disrupted the pacing and I thought it was abrupt in a good way, but perhaps not well executed. In a way that's kinda the whole book. It feels unintentionally off balance. There's plenty mystery about the main location, their daily life, but the how's and why's of the 'antagonist' is barely touched upon. I wish there was a little more information on the
faerie, monsters, changeling, whatever the hell was the creatures and WHY they were bound there and what was the doorway?
I finished the book thinking this was a duology or series, but I didn't notice such a thing mentioned.

I wouldn't mind reading whatever the author publishes next. They are skilled enough to put together a cohesive story with an interesting, fairly unique folk tale twist.
