This book was engaging the whole way through. Excellent commentary on politics, English society, religion and art. it has well woven in references to greek mythology which i enjoyed. The romance is very well constructed as lucy’s holiday progresses and she starts to form her own opinions about the characters she finds herself surrounded by. Once back in England the story complicates even further as Lucy has two decide which of two worlds she wants to live in. Definitely now one of my all time favourites.

A lovely and slightly sad little read, beautifully written and giving me a longing for both the Italian and English countryside! I never really feel like I can give ratings to classics, but I enjoyed this and would like to read more by Forster.

A coming of age spurred along by Lucy’s sheltered life being exposed to a new way of thinking and a different kind of person in Florence - slowed down by her return to England and her engagement - before suddenly coming to a head.

I read this over a few weeks and the Italian and English half feel like two very distinct novels, with many of the same characters finding themselves both in the pension and the neighbourhood (a coincidence remarked upon a number of times) and I enjoyed the final return to Florence.

A novel which seemed to me to be ultimately about love, and pursuing this passion above social niceties and the expected manners of the day.
