You know what I think I like this book. It wasn’t the great love story I was expecting but I liked it

I loved how the characters were portrayed ("It is so difficult - at least, I find it difficult - to understand people who speak the truth." p.7) and the oddness of their conversations ("I suggested we should hinder them, said Mr Beebe. They are worth it." p.121) There was bickering and fussing over things and only these sorts of parts were actually written ("Lucy answered suitably." p.32

Cute story! Rather amusing at times.

“We cast a shadow on something wherever we stand, and it is no good moving from place to place to save things; because the shadow always follows. Choose a place where you won't do harm - yes, choose a place where you won't do very much harm, and stand in it for all you are worth, facing the sunshine.”

This book wasn’t on my radar until I recently read Still Life by Sarah Winman. I loved how Ms. Winman wrote a story that wasn’t just influenced by A Room With A View but a love letter. A Room With A View is smart and well-written. I appreciated the author’s attention to detail and character but I was driven to read this book like Still Life. I liked it but I like the clearer view of Still Life.

Beautiful prose. A relatively slow start in part 1 and even the first half of part 2, but then it accelerates wonderfully and really had me actually caring for the characters.
