Marillier's prose is always full of magic and nice words, you can't get enough of it. This book however surprised me for changing the view from Evyind to Nessa, which for the first time I had a chance to read a male character being written by what I am beginning to consider a "feminist" writer. The fighting parts were very well written, especially when people consider Marillier's stories "love stories" or only intended for women. Not as good as "Wildwood dancing" or "Heart's blood" but still worth to buy and read.

4.5 stars! Very good! Loved the clash of cultures and ideologies and the like. Very well written. Couldn’t decide between 4 and 5 stars so 4.5 feels right

I wanted to like this more than I did. No really, I did! The story is a good one, it just kept getting bogged down in extra words it didn't need.

I felt this series was very original in content and very well-crafted. I loved the depth to which Marillier developed her characters, and the Scandinavian roots of the story. It was not at all predictable or formulaic, IMO. Nothing disappointing, unless you count the fact that there were only two books in the series! Read them both!

I got more than 2/3 done with this, but I just don’t care enough to finish. I didn’t hate it. But I’m just over it.
