The second book in the trilogy moved too slowly for me, and I wished Bartimaeus would have been featured more prominently - I enjoy the books for his zingers. It was still an enjoyable read, but not as fun as the first.
A fun second volume for the series, but also I think it would stand on its own quite well. In fact, I feel like it was a little quicker to get started and generally exciting than the first book, though the first book introduced the entertainingly snarky tone better. So I don't know if I'd really recommend that anyone start here... but you could. :)
Loved the additional protagonist -- looking forward to the next volume in hopes she's featured there, too.

Just like book 1, The Amulet of Samarkand, this was a really fun book to read over a weekend. Less of Nathaniel (yeah!), more of Kitty (yeah!), and laugh-out-loud footnotes from Bartimaeus. Can't wait to read book 3.
Continuing the story from the first book, the second book improves on certain aspects in the first book. We get to learn a lot more about the world, history, and institutions. Additionally, the second book presents perspectives of the "commoners", which provide a great contrast and world-building element. Through those elements, we dive deeper into the social issues affecting the world of Bartimaeus.
Similar to the first book, the character interactions are one of the strongest points of The Golem's Eye. I especially enjoyed Kitty and Bartimaeus' interactions.
One very minor issue for me is that the chapters felt a bit short, possibly due to increasing the number of point of views in the story. I understand the book is longer than the first one, but still it would have been good to have the point of view switches less often (or more often but with more chapters (?), I do not know...). (And a few minor issues with the story that would be major spoiler, but still very minor).

This is a really fantastically written series with great world-building. There is a strong theme of civil rights issues & a lot of "thoughts" by one of the genies on what it feels like to be a slave. There is also a great deal of focus on civil rights - as in this world, Wizards rule the world and mortals merely serve in it with no representation...during a time of depression and war.
This isn't the story- it's just the world the story is told in, and ...as in all worlds, the situation of your characters' lives does effect how they respond to their experiences. This was very well written series, with a social conscience, and I enjoyed it a great deal.

Couldn't get into it. There's way too much lead up to whatever the actual plot is and it's not interesting enough to keep your attention until then
