This book is fun to read, witty and entertaining, but probably not one I’ll be feeling the need to read again in the future.

I read this book because the obituary of David Lodge, who died on January 1st, suggested that the book would be really interesting and funny. Unfortunately, for the most part neither was true for me. I am glad the book was short because I couldn't get much into the lives of the two, white middle age protagonist. The structure of the book with parallel sections and writing motifs for each character was a bit corny. While reading this book I thought of the books of Philip Roth which I favor, but not by much.

Of its time. Battle of the sexes esp. male perspective. Female characters mainly background to the plot. University politics and student life.

An entertaining read. And it takes us back to a time and a few particular types of setting. Contrived? Yes. Definitely a book rather than a film or miniseries. Contrast Nice Work.
I liked the guidance from the book on how to write a novel, telling us that nobody writes epistolary novels any more, just after a whole epistolary section.
