1969, Rummidge, Inglismaa/Euphoria, Ameerika Ühendriigid. Kaks neljakümnendates akadeemikut satuvad osalema vahetusprogrammis, kus neil tuleb kuueks kuuks kohad vahetada. Inglane Philip Swallow on silmapaistmatu kuju, kellel pole ette näidata suuri saavutusi ega publikatsioone.
Järgnevate osadega võrreldes on autor esimeses katsetanud rohkem eri stiilidega. Nii koosneb näiteks üks peatükk üksnes ajalehe artiklitest. See osa meeldis mulle raamatust kõige rohkem, sest oli vaja kasutada oskust lugeda ridade vahelt.
Soovitan raamatuid neile, keda huvitab eelmise sajandi lõpu akadeemiline maailm. Minu jaoks jäi küll enamik käsitletud teemasid kaugeteks ning raske oli süveneda, kuid silmaringi laiendamise mõttes oli igati vahva lugemine ja mõnest naljast sain ikka aru ka.

This was a pretty entertaining read; it has dated a fair bit sometimes that is part of its charm. The characters are quite well drawn and it is funny in places as well as being very plot-driven. Occasionally it did stray too far into bedroom farce territory. I might well read the sequels.
maybe i shouldn't have read small world first but it was so much better and funnier than this iirc! maybe i'm just being difficult

Loved the audiobook. Hated the story. Will elaborate later.
This took me long enough.
The story is full of clichés, sexism and misogyny. The characters weren’t lovable at all. They were just two disgusting pigs. I would’ve DNF the book weren’t I supposed to read it for a debate in a class.
I hate the story with all my heart.
On the other hand, I actually loved the (czech) audiobook because the book has a unique format so there was a lot of space for them to play with the audio version. And they used all this potential and created a unique reader/listener experience.
But it was very bad overall, because the story is more important than the execution. Would not recommend.

Two professors, alike in propensity...
David Lodge's book of two university professors on a job exchange in 1969 is a fun read, reminding me of the works of [a:Thorne Smith|171139|Thorne Smith|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/authors/1358230465p2/171139.jpg] in its light-hearted dealings of sometimes serious matters. The book is a snapshot of the end of the 60s told from the safe distance of 1975 (the book's publication date) and shows the differences and, more importantly, the similarities between a Berkeley-like Euphoria (located in a fictive middle state between north and south California and Rummidge, a stand in for Birmingham.
It's a nice comedy of contrasts as the two men, Phillip Swallow from England and Morris Zapp from America end up taking over each other's lives, finding in the them the missing parts of themselves. There's an exploration of environment vs. upbringing along with a certain amount of healthy absurdity.
At times, the book is laugh out loud funny and at times rather thought provoking. In both cases it proves that university faculties are the same everywhere in the world.

For some reason, I thought this would be funnier. Perhaps it is a brand of humor I don't get. Basically, two professors (neither one of which is very likable) switch positions for a semester. The professor from California goes to England and vice versa. They both end up having an affair with the other one's wife. The British guy in California ends up involved in a bunch of student riots (it's 1968). The guy in England ends up starting some student riots.
I gave it three starts because I didn't hate it, but if it had been any longer than 250 pages, I might not have bothered.

A BLOODY OPEN ENDING AND EXECUTED SO RIDICULOUSLY
