Erika Hall gives a handy book on user research and the variety of tools one can use to do so. On top of that, she starts the book by dispelling the common arguments against user research. I found that the content started off very well, but slowly it started to feel too informative. Also had an abrupt ending, but I'll just follow Erika on Twitter to get more of her design pep talks.

This book started off strong but the second half just scratches the surface. This book isn’t for practitioners, but good for teams that don’t have a UX Researcher.

Just ok. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I didn't learn a great deal from this (although it was short).
Also, it's tailored to a business / tech / web-dev audience so it's not as general as you might expect from the blurb...
