I had long been excited about reading this book, and finally managed to pick it up at an airport recently. While the content is interesting, I found it a struggle to read. It was too conversational and obviously framed for mass market consumption rather than for someone with any knowledge about the topic. Slightly disappointed, but still a good intro to the topic for anyone unfamiliar and seeking an easy entry.

کتاب‌هایی مثل این کتاب که به دنبال نظریه پردازی هستند، دلیلی نمی‌بینند که به نظریات دیگر در حوزه مورد بحثشون بپردازن. دلیلی هم نداره. ما به عنوان خواننده نباید تمام حرف‌های هر کتابی رو دربست قبول کنیم. بهترین موضع؛ این هم میتونه باشه.
انتظار داشتم مثالی از ایران هم بیاره که تنها در بخشی اشاره به سیطره حکومت بر رسانه‌ها مربوط به انتخابات 88 که اون هم سانسور شده.
کتاب نظریه‌های جغرافیا و فرهنگی رو کنار میذاره و تنها به نهادهای سیاسی میپردازه. سوال اینجاست که مگر همین موقعیت جغرافی یا فرهنگی و اعتقادی باعث تفاوت‌ها نمیشه؟ مگر همین تفاوت‌ها باعث تصمیم‌های متفاوت هر قوم در زمانهای مختلف نمیشه؟
مثلا آیا فرهنگ تقدیر گرایی ایرانیان تاثیری بر نحوه‌ی زندگی و به دنبال اون تاسیس سیستم‌های حکومتی نداشته؟

Llegué a conocer Por Qué Fracasan los Países gracias a la recomendación de una profesora de Economía y, aunque no sabía demasiado sobre qué me esperaba en estas páginas, no dudé en aventurarme a leerlo. Este es un libro de no ficción que, en lo personal, no se me hizo pesado y me atrapó de principio a fin. Lo leí en un par de horas, devorando el análisis de Acemoğlu sobre los orígenes y el estado actual de el poder, la prosperidad, la desigualdad social y la pobreza. Sé que no es un libro para todxs pero, si les interesa la temática, sin duda se los recomiendo a montones. No es necesariamente una lectura amena, pero es sumamente interesante y atrapante en su planteo. Por Qué Fracasan los Países busca, en resumen, responder a esa misma pregunta, estudiando los típicos factores que unx imagina y sugiriendo distintas razones que explican las sociedades actuales y sus orígenes. No sé, yo lo amé por completo :)
Terrific thesis in demystifying ethnocentric and geographical explanations as to why some nations do well and some don't. Could have been a shorter book or even a long-form article. The merit of how long it is i the author's deliberately adding more to the argument throughout.
