I grew up watching Kate Mulgrew in Ryan's Hope, Mrs. Columbo, then as Captain Kathryn Janeway. So it was kind of neat hearing about her life, her heartaches, her children, and how she gained the roles I knew her for, and just how hard she's worked throughout her life on her craft. I was amused, at times, by her take on instances in her life, though I felt her deep pain over the adoption of her daughter, and how her female friends sustained her and helped her cope. Her writing was earthy, amusing, at times poetic, and honest.
I am currently binge-watching Star Trek: Voyager and have fallen in love with Kate Mulgrew and her character of Captain Kathryn Janeway. This autobiography of her life was so poetic and gave great insight to her background. I admired her decision to have her daughter and give her up for adoption. I also love her drive and passion for her career. I cannot wait to start Orange is the New Black now!
Confident and self-possessed. Kate is a bad-ass and doesn't apologize for it.
This book was much better than I expected - and it didn't tackle what I thought it would, either. She has a great flair for writing. It kept me engaged and wanted to read more.
The book ends on a cliffhanger...which I then had to take to Wikipedia to get the rest of the story.
Excellent read. Makes me like her even more!

Love, love, loved this autobiography and highly recommend the audiobook version. Kate Mulgrew is fantastic, and this book made me love her more than I already did.
I enjoyed this book from the beginning --- up until the end, which happened in what seemed like the middle of a sentence. No closure, no wrap-up. Just stopped. Very disappointing.
This was one of the finest memoirs I've ever come across. The author has a richness of insight that few are capable of when pointing their lens at a mirror. I listened to the audiobook, which Mulgrew reads, and which is filled with unforgettable joy and sorrow. Her recollections have the sort of brutal but musical honesty that have stayed with me for weeks after hearing them. I've found her exquisite voice narrating many of my own characters as they come to life on the keyboard. What a gift!
