Read this on the train to London to see the play. Nearly 200 years old its still an entirely imaginable, magical story. The ghosts must have inspired bit of Harry Potter, & they still mention sprouts & mince pies! Great start to advent. Marvellous tale, & great adaptation at the Old Vic too.

A Step into the Classics with Dickens

One of my goals for 2021 is to read some of the classics, and after Christmas I decided 'A Christmas Carol' was a good place to start. The story moves along at a good pace, but the only difficulty I found was in the tone and context of the language ~ which naturally was in line with the late 19th century concepts and I found a little bit of a slog. Despite this, the story is an excellent one, it moves along at a cracking pace and I'd happily recommend it.

All too often in the rush of life, we get consumed by the pursuit of the material, and Dickens' novella is poignantly deliberate in its forcing Scrooge to go inward to the very depths of his soul to confront his greed. While I was glad to see the story I'm used to from movie and TV adaptions, one moment that struck me, in particular, was how Scrooge witnessed the pawning of his material possessions after his death while visited by the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come and to hear what those people had to say about him if he persisted on the path he was on now. Brief though the novella may be, A Christmas Carol is a keen reminder of the butterfly effect of our demeanor on the world around us, so why not carry the spirit of Christmas all year long while we still are able.

The best book I could possibly read on Christmas Eve! This was so well written and the fact the movie is almost exactly the same made me so happy! This amazing book made me laugh and it made me cry. I honestly love it. So glad I finally read it!!

How can you not love this story. It's wonderful and timeless.
Because the book is actually more than a story, but a message related to the current events of the time I think it benefits the reader to understand the culture of the time to get the full meaning of the book.

I like that it is small enough to repeat each year.
I had watched many versions of the story over and over again but had never read or listened to Dickens' own words until now. Having visited his home in London this summer it seemed like a good time to do it.
