I liked the switching narratives i just wish it had continued to the end of the book, i liked the mix of less emotional third person narratives and more emotional first person sections

This book is impeccably written. I found it to be a harrowing story about the realities of generational trauma due to slavery/racism, as well a portraying the symptoms of PTSD in a seamless and impactful way to help dissolve some of the stigma around this diagnosis. While I found this book to be very much worth the read, I rated it three stars because my star system is based of how much I enjoyed a book, this one left me somber and was not a comfort read.

Toni Morrison is certainly the most humanist writer I have ever read. Although her characters partake in some disgusting acts, she does not pass any judgement on them. She also weaves these two narratives together so well, with the stories connecting to the overall theme beautifully. Despite the shortness of this novella, she manages to bring up so many different societal issues and to write characters that are quite three dimensional. While I prefer her longer works, Home still has the heart that I expect from a Toni Morrison novel.

❤️

Instant 5/5, read it in 4 hours, cried at the end.

"In this world with these people she wanted to be the person who would never again need rescue."

"I can be miserable if I want to. You don't need to try and make it go away. It shouldn't go away. It's just as sad as it ought to be and I'm not going to hide from what's true just because it hurts."

As always, Toni Morrison's sentences are just a joy to listen to. I appreciate how she shows the tragedies, hardships, and abuses that the characters endure with such compassion. In this story, we follow Frank Money who is returning home from the Korean War and dealing with PTSD and US's racism.
