Enjoyed this one
My first book by this author and I really enjoyed it. I connected to the characters and side characters. It’s been a while since I’ve read a book that wasn’t a dual POV. I did get angry with Luke about 3/4 in...like man up but he eventually did. Looking forward to Ms. Baker

This was just boring. No get up and go - a really short book which felt so so long.

Overall Opinion:
For the next three months, the new public defender Emma moves into the small town of Chestertown where she comes across Luke, the police officer who challenges her at every turn. Their relationship heats up but what will they do when someone threatens to tear them apart?
Lea Coll's “Ms. Lawyer” falls into the mediocre category. I liked the overall premise of the story which I was drawn to when reading the blurb but ultimately it fell flat. Emma and Luke lacked depth, there was no excitement leading up to the built-up of the conclusion of the novel and I frankly was done and over this half way through. Nothing particularly stood out and overall writing left much to desire. Basically “Ms. Lawyer” shall remained unmemorable by my standards. I appreciate the ARC and the time the author took to write this but to say the least, this just wasn't for me.
Emma takes a job to fill in for the public defender's office. As she works there, she meets friends and the man running for sheriff, Luke. They gravitate toward each other quickly and the flirting is off the charts. He draws her cute little pictures and she finds ways to run into him.
As Luke's campaign is underway, he's torn between his public image and his personal life. So much so that he's constantly pushing Emma away to suit his campaign manager. When he finds out that Emma is only here temporarily, it comes to a boiling point.
Emma is dealing with cases, friends, and her inner turmoil. There are some shady deals that happen when you mess with the wrong side of the law.
The book was quite enjoyable and I found I wanted to know more about Luke and Emma where they stood throughout the story.

I liked the characters and loved the setting (a small town on the Maryland shore) of Ms. Coll's debut book, Ms. Lawyer. Emma, the former discontented small-town teen who became a big-city lawyer who finds herself temporarily transported to a new small town, is surprised at how quickly she fits into her new home. She fits right into the quirky group she finds there, and is immediately drawn to Luke, a police officer who is running for sheriff. Will their jobs (police officer vs public defender) be a barrier to their growing relationship, and will dating the public defender keep Luke from achieving the sheriff's position he's wanted for so long? What about the expiration date on Emma's time in Chestertown?
Read Ms. Lawyer to find out!
It's pretty clear that Ms. Coll is setting up most of the friends in Emma and Luke's circle for future books, which could be a lot of fun. As her first, this book does lean a bit harder on the telling rather than showing side of storytelling, and some of the conflicts here tend toward overdone in the moment yet are then easily resolved--I'm sure as Ms. Coll gains more experience, her writing style will develop accordingly.
