the second book gave me some serious slow ass burn and i LOVED it. it got a smidge repetitive at times but i was able to overlook it for the sake of ✨romance✨. casteel blew my back out every time he opened his dimpled mouth and i am hanging on by a thread and very satisfied. not gonna lie i got confused by the world building at times, it was doing the mostest in its attempts to really get me lost BUT i think i got the gist of it in the end. overall, i really enjoyed the second instalment of the blood and ash series and can’t wait to pick up the third once i get back home 🥰

The first novel in the series captured my attention, but Kingdom of Flesh and Fire captured my heart. It's wildly indulgent, and I caught myself holding my breath. The world is vivid and complex and the reader gets to watch Poppy learn to inhabit the world as herself, unapologetically. The pacing worked well and I did not find myself hoping for moments to end or scenes to move on already. There are themes that may not be ideal for everyone so I recommend caution before diving in. I personally devoured this read, only breaking to sleep after first picking it up. I know that the book hangover will be fierce with this one, so I eagerly await the third installment.
Poppy and Hawke (Casteel but I digress) are captivating, I felt like I had been awakened when I first indulged in their romance, but the added twist of Casteel's betrayal and Poppy's conflicting attraction add a delicious forbidden layer to their encounters. I appreciated the way that the author handled Hawke/Casteel's name, the character felt changed and developed, but not so wholly separate from the Hawke I had grown to love. The intimacy of his names added even more to the building romance throughout the story, especially when Poppy and Hawke allowed themselves to pretend. I love Poppy and Hawke, I love Poppy and Casteel and I love that it could feel so real.
