NYC is born and that births 6 avatars meant to come together and fight a city-destroying enemy.
It's beautiful and haunting and reads like a wholly original idea. Why is it not meant for me? One: because I have no interest in ever actually visiting New York; too many people. 2: is it the avatars are all very clearly people of color and the enemy is 'KAREN" writ large as an interdimensional monster bringing white homogeneity to the world. The sole white avatar is Staten Island who turns her back on the people of New York to side with the enemy and to preserve here white isolation.
Then again, maybe a book about a white ally turning her back on people of color in their time of need is absolutely written for me. Maybe for you too.

I found the start a little slow; however, it picked up a bit more about a third of the way through and by the last bit it was hard to put down.

I was very curious going into this book, set in our world as opposed to Jemisin's other works, and my curiosity was thoroughly sated. What can I say about the writing except it was the same amazing quality I've come to expect from this author? Not much. I don't want to drop heavily into spoilers so as far as content goes: the characters were unique and distinct (I'm in love with Bronca) and the story as it unfolded was compelling and well paced. I love the world building here, which again did not surprise me. I absolutely cannot wait for book two!
