— okay… it’s time… my first murakami!
definitely started with this because of 1) he’s such an intimidating author so i felt like short stories would ease me into his writing style and 2) drive my car is most likely getting an oscar nomination and i refused to watch it until i read the source text lol

some of these were very good and others kinda had me falling asleep at times but it was overall pretty enjoyable!
highlights: drive my car, scheherazade (which should totally be a full length novel) & kino!
i also appreciated the uno reverse trick of the metamorphosis by kafka in samsa in love VERY much!
this just makes me so excited to keep reading his work!

When I first read this title/Men Without Women, I was expecting a more hopeful read. Unfortunately, what I got was a book centred mostly around sexual urges, masking itself into stories of varied personalities. As someone who’s enjoyed most of Murakami’s works, dare I say, this was not it. With a title like that, there was so much that could’ve been written rather than just reducing women to their sexual appeal. That was one theme that was so persistent throughout, and what for? I’m not too sure. Because, while I get that sexual appeal is an instinctive nature of the human race, focusing only on that seemed absurd.
