I love a smutty book, especially a smutty book reinforcing sex positivity! I settled on a three star rating because I would have said 4 stars for the sex and 2 stars for everything else. Josh Darling’s reputation comes through as well deserved for the reader. His charm carries this book. If you’re picking The Roommate for the raunchy bits, have at it. Otherwise, maybe find something else.

I found myself suspending my disbelief constantly throughout this book, primarily because of timing. For example, the short amount of time it took for Shameless to become operational, for Clara to find a job (thank you, family member who hasn’t been seen or heard from for 10 years?!), and for Clara to process her “final feelings” towards Everett
even though she bought a sexy dress and flew out to see him in Vegas?! I guess literally seeing him helped her realize what she felt for Josh, but couldn’t that have been accomplished (albeit less dramatically) as she packed up her half suitcase of memorabilia?
.

Also, some of the conflict in the plot points didn’t come to fruition and add the needed tension like a more solid storyline could have, like Clara’s family drama. Clara’s insights to her mother’s strength and how that shaped her own prim-and-proper behavior were the most poignant aspects but too few.

Finally, I took issue at one of Josh’s descriptions of Naomi. He alluded to Naomi’s potential attraction to Clara (sight unseen) because Naomi was adventurous in bed and bisexual. Bisexuality does not mean automatic, instant attraction to every person!!! STOP THIS HARMFUL, BASELESS STEREOTYPE!!!
