Yeah, I was kinda thinking, 'Oh look Pacific Rim except written by a Japanese person.' but it's nothing like Pacific Rim to be honest and it's really fun and definitely worth it. Nothing life-changing (although I really liked how they explained kaijus and how they don't follow the rules of this universe since they belong to the mythic universe--that sort of thing I really could get behind and also astrophysics) but it never set out to be fake deep from the start any way.
