I really enjoyed this book. The characters were really enjoyable. I really liked Laura. And David seemed like a good character until his death. Mark was a likeable character. He played like he was shy but I could see right through it. I was suspicious of TC throughout. That’s the power of Harlan Cobens writing. You don’t know who to trust. Because of this the atmosphere was off putting and creepy at times. I liked the settings. Partly in Sydney and partly in Boston. This might have biased my review slightly as I hold a strong connection to both. Although the plot had many twists and turn, I did guess part of the plot quite early, but that didn’t take away from how much I liked Coben’s writing. I found it very hard to put this book down, I managed to read over 500 pages in just 2 days. I really cannot wait to read more from Harlan Coben.

It took me 5 hours reading in the sun to get this far in, and I didn’t care at all.

Play Dead by Harlan Coben

In the introduction, Harlan Coben himself said this wasn't the best book he had written, it was his first. I however was pleasantly surprised! It was easy to work out what one or two of the twists were halfway through the book, and it did get a bit annoying when he mentioned how beautiful the protagonist was in every sentence. Despite that, I though it was just as strong as the first of his books I read and better than the Myron Bolitar one.

I’m a massive fan of Mister Coben’s work. Any past reviews can tell you that. While this book did have its moments, overall I left feeling unsatisfied.

In the preface of this printing, Coben explains this is the first book he ever wrote, and not a thing has been changed. This is what it is, warts and all. While the book is enjoyable, it certainly could benefit from some editing. I’d hazard to guess almost 100 pages or more could be shaved off and the work would be MUCH stronger.

You catch glimpses of the impeccable storyteller and humorist Coben is to become in this book. But there are sequences of character anguish, of exposition to edge the reader along again and again that feel wholly unnecessary, and after awhile I found myself skipping them entirely and asking the characters to get to the point.

Unquestionably my least favorite of his works, but a bad Coben outing still trumps some author’s best attempts. But certainly don’t let this be your introduction to his work.
