Finished this with my dog on my lap. Heart wrenching story of the love a dog has for his boy. I felt the abuse of both the boy and dog might be too much for some middle school kids but the love between Bodie and Aiden was fantastically portrayed.

This book was okay. I would recommend it, though the age is definitely 12+. The brainstorming was pretty good, but there were a few points in which I thought the plot was being dragged on a bit before it picked its reason and purpose up.

Not sure about the theology of this book regarding the afterlife, but as a story of the fierce love of a dog for his boy, this was spot on. As Brodie is a ghost you already know he’s dead at the beginning. But the details of what happened to him are brutal (and thankfully brief). Bring your tissues for the end.

Had high hopes for this one after loving The Honest Truth and Some Kind of Courage but was kind of disappointed. The second half was better than the first and it did manage to squeeze a couple tears out of me near the end. I found it unnecessarily long though and the many sentence fragments ending in a question mark (e.g. “Because Brodie?”) irritating. Some other elements I found a bit problematic.

This book had some great moments and characters, but is a bit too sentimental and archly told for me.

This book killed me. I cried the whole time… And considering that I was listening to it that meant that I was crying while grocery shopping, cleaning, at the bank and trying to explain why everywhere that I went. I grew up with dogs and know the joy and love of having a special dog. Now as a father with a boy, and no dogs ... yet... I long to bring that same joy to him and the rest of our family.

Beware, this book may cause you to visit Humane Society’s looking for the “Brodie” you’ve been missing.

Beautifully written story of love and hope and goodness. Some of the sentences were so brilliant that I had to pause and savor them.
