The Decennial doesn’t choose the best—it chooses the last one standing.

What an enchantingly gut punching read! This story absolutely just swept me away. This was such a magical, bittersweet story full of love, loss, and a beautifully complex cast who must decide who they’ll become in eternity. The school system was so unique, the magic so atmospheric, but it was the characters—their relationships tangled with loyalty, betrayal, and unspoken love—that absolutely stole the show. Six POVs and I adored every single one of them!

This plot had a premise that is silly, as many do, but it was far from engaging or well written enough to distract from that. Why in the world would only 16-18 year olds die and be condemned to going to school?? I am wholly shocked that this book has nearly 4 stars as the writing was lacking, the multiple POVs jarring in the beginning, and just overall it was not at all as interesting as it seemed to think it was.

The premise was interesting! A YA dark academia set in purgatory with rivalries and the Decennial, a high-stakes competition every 10 years? Count me in.

What I enjoyed: interesting magic system, decent world building, a competition with trials, the academic rivalries

What I didn’t enjoy as much: the characters felt more juvenile in terms of action and thoughts (to be fair, they are teenagers), too many secrets/not enough communication, too many POVs

I typically don’t mind multi-POV books but I wish we had fewer ones in this book so we could have spent more time with each character and developed them more. The ending was fast paced and ended on a cliffhanger. I’m curious to see how the series will continue!
