I wanted to like A Tale for the Time Being much more than I did. I loved the chapters from Ruth's perspective, and I would read an entire book based on Ruth and Oliver's lives. I felt that those chapters were stronger because Ozeki was writing about something she knew; the way she described the island, the dynamic between Ruth and Oliver, and Ruth's character, in general, were written better. Nao's chapters fell short for me, I couldn't really connect with her character, and the only time I really enjoyed reading from her perspective was when she was with Jiko. I love when books add real-life information to the storyline, it makes me feel smart for learning new things while also enjoying the story, so bonus points for that. I really wish I loved this book, and I thought it would be right up my alley, but it was only slightly enjoyable for me and took me a long time to finish.

Loved this book so much!! It being told from the perspective of the reader and writer of the diary was so fun and interesting to read. I also really liked the appendices and cliff notes added. Nao was an amazing character and I loved reading about her while also learning about Buddhism. I thought the way that Ruth and Nao’s characters contrasted made for an exciting story and I also liked how they shared similarities in their lives and it felt like their two separate stories blended more and more the further I got into the book.

What a lovely novel. It was long, but there were some beautiful meditations. The ending was powerful, tying the stories together -- especially the generational story of Jigo, Haruki #1, Haruki #2, and Nao, replete with understanding. And, it has some of my favorite tropes, like the cat who comes back, and hope is restored, and we can be better tomorrow, and today is good because we're alive.

CW for suicide, suicide ideation, pet death, death of a child, death in general, war, bullying, prostitution of a minor

Throughout the whole book all kinds of abuse was described, sometimes in great detail. It was horrifying and way too much for me. It ranged from suicidal thoughts, to bullying in school, to 9/11 and the 2011 tsunami.

Nao's attempt at writing about her nun great grandmother was what caught my attention first and made me add this to my tbr, but I loved Ruth's parts equally, if not more. I loved the natural science parts as well as her relationship with Oliver and life on the island and the magic realism towards the second half was done well too. Will be thinking about this one for some time.
