Ties nicely with Civilization and its Discontents - a life of "ordinary unhappiness" is incompatible with true satisfaction because it requires the vigilant self policing of the id. But surrendering to the id dissolves the ego into baser passions. So what now? Just be normal I guess idk

Like most children born in the 1990s I was introduced to this play after Daniel Radcliffe starred in it immediately post-his most infamous role wrapping. Now I own three copies of it and one of my favorite theatrical monologues is the one Dysart gives in Act 1 Scene 5. Shaffer wrote this play to explore the possible motivations of a brief news clipping he read, and the resultant unpacking of the human psyche is as alarming as it is deeply fascinating to me.
