A short intriguing novel set with the backdrop of Edinburgh’s gothic old town. Delores can see ghosts, who aren’t very friendly, she is a necromancer who is sent to stay with the uncles to learn how to control her powers. When there she meets a range of supernatural characters and there are lots of dark secrets.
I enjoyed the setting of the book and the building mystery. I really loved some of the unique characters. A great book to start older children and young teens into the spooky gothic style books. I’m interested to see if there is a sequel!

I enjoyed this more than I thought it would! A really great spooky gothic tale for ‘inbetweener’ readers who love a bit of spook but aren’t big on romance. Delores Mackenzie’s story is one of ghosts, illusions, found family, and coming into our own power. Love the Edinburgh setting, and I sped through the last 150 pages in one night.

What an amazing Gothic mystery for readers of MG fiction. Set in Edinburgh, the story is about 12 year old Dolores Mackenzie, a necromancer whose talents are getting beyond her control. In order to learn more about her gifts, she is sent to stay with the mysterious Uncles who live in Tolbooth bookshop where they support and train other young paranormal, and Dolores finally feels she fits in somewhere. Soon, Dolores becomes ensnared in a supernatural mystery which will test her skills to a dangerous extent, ultimately endangering herself and her new friends.
It’s an amazing story with strong characters and an intriguing plot.
