A stunning work, gripping, remarkably prescient for its time. Butler may have had the timeline off by a few years, and been too optimistic about the pace of climate change, but she clearly saw the coming downturn of society that we're living through. We would all do well to read this enthralling book and follow its characters' example of preparing for, finding, building, and protecting community when societal safeguards fail.

By the end of the first chapter or so of the Parable of the Sower, I knew I was going to rate this novel five stars. It is easily the best book I’ve read this year, and possibly the best science fiction book I’ve ever read. The audiobook is fantastic, too; Lynne Thigpen brings this narration to life and creates such embodied characters with her voice.

So many science fiction novels read like anthropological texts or technical journals: they describe their worlds with exacting but distant prose. The Parable of the Sower does not keep its distance—you are right there with the narrator, in the blood and sweat and shit, experiencing this dystopian reality right along with her. And this dystopian world is believable and vivid and jarring. It holds a mirror to our own society and forces us to consider a future where capitalism and climate change have taken their worst possible courses.

Thank you, Octavia Butler. What a masterpiece.

god almighty. i find myself thinking like lauren at least in regards to god. is this scary? is this a warning of what’s to come? what is the fate of your world if your god has become change? what is it if your god is stagnant? Butler writes dystopia like it can be real. not like anything i’ve read before. everything feels too far away, too glitzy. i have to remember though this is only dystopia for the US
