I originally picked up The Many Deaths of Laila Starr because the coworker who usually moderates our Sci-Fi book club was sick, and I offered to step in. Little did I know that this graphic novel would pull me in so deeply that I’d devour issues 1-4 between helping patrons at work.
Ram V’s storytelling is mesmerizing, and the way he brings Laila, the avatar of Death, to life (pun intended) in this story is captivating. I was equally fascinated by the color palette Filipe Andrade used throughout the cells—it added so much depth to the magical realism of the narrative. The observations on life—both the mundane and the profound—struck a chord with me.
Darius, the creator of immortality, was a character I didn’t expect to care so much about, but he really drew out Death’s humanity in a way that kept me hooked. Watching Laila spare his life again and again added layers of complexity to their relationship, which unfolded in such an intriguing way.
The final issue was stunning and emotional; it genuinely brought tears to my eyes. It wasn’t just me, either—one of the attendees at the book club teared up, too. Ram V and Filipe Andrade crafted something special here, blending myth, mortality, and magic into a story that’s hard to forget.

A cute story about grief and obsession over immortality while letting life pass by in the search of it.
