Most short stories that I've read set in the Prairies are school-approved literary fare, such as slice-of-life tales about early settlers or the fur trade or rural living. Not exactly something I've reached for since escaping high school.
Sometimes, you just want to read about some cursed hockey skates or a soul-fetching Canadian goose or hungry trees or purple ghosts, all set around familiar names and landmarks, like Dauphin, like the Half-way Tree, like the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
If you got tired of "Prairie literature" meaning thinly veiled Grade 11 history homework, you'll definitely appreciate this collection.
