I enjoyed this. It was such a quick read at 50 pages, just enough to introduce the characters and peak your interest in both them and the plot possibilities. The author notes at the end that she is trying to gauge interest with this short, and to please comment on her website if you would like to read more about the characters and this plot. Initially Kali makes me think of Firefly's Kaylee, however, I could see her evolving beyond this as the author grows her character. The flash gold concept is interesting, it would be great to see Kali learn more about it, her father, and how her father invented it. Her involvement with Cedar could be good too if happens on a subtle, natural level. I'd hate to see it turn into a formula romance.

I really, really wanted to like this book. It had all the right elements. The location was amazing. The premise was perfect. The cast of characters? Wonderful.

But what I take away from the book is yet another damsel in semi-distress. Yes, she was able to take care of herself, but the EverLooming ManFigure was just simply too required.

Fun little novella. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Enjoyed the banter between the main characters. It sort of reminded me of Serenity, which is a favorite film of mine.

actual rating: maybe 3.5 stars

I really love Lindsay Buroker's writing as always! Buuut I felt like the two main characters were very similar to two characters from the author's other series The Emperor's Edge.

Besides that, I liked it a lot ^^ The setting in Alaska plus steampunk PLUS mysterious mineral rocks is very original.

This is aggressively average. It reminds me of an episode from a TV show that gets cancelled part-way through its first season. It plays it safe, recycling characters, predictable plots, and story beats you've seen a hundred times before.

The steampunk Klondike gold rush setting is vaguely interesting, though literally I've just described the entirety of the world-building; it isn't any deeper than that. Cedar is tall, dark, and handsome and is conveniently able to prove his trustworthiness by saving Kali's life approximately 12 seconds after meeting. But the running gag for the remainder of the book is how she doesn't trust him yet. I think it is supposed to be funny when she says it for the 8th time? And if you can't predict the two of them are going to have a will-they-or-won't-they thing for the next whatever books then you've failed to grasp how this series is content to never surprise and simply deliver on the formula.

I actually don't blame people who really enjoyed this; comfort reading is perfectly fine and not every book needs to be high literature. But 2-stars on Goodreads says it means "it was okay" and I can't really say it was more than just okay.

Looking for a nice cold read full of excitement? Lindsay Buroker’s Flash Gold has got everything you’re looking for. The main character Kali McAlister is ready to enter her dogless sled in a competition for a nice financial prize that will help her move away from Moose Hollow, into someplace where no one has ever heard of her or her father, where she can get a fresh start as an inventor. Too bad everyone else in the race is out to get her. What she could use is a partner.

Novella. Good stuff. If you like the "Iron Seas" books by Meljean Brook you'll like these.

This is a quick-paced enjoyable adventure with characters and a plot that are instantly engaging. The story introduces a substance called "Flash Gold" but does not tell you what it is, other than it can act as a power source and a lot of unsavoury people want it, which is what the plot revolves around.

A novella (very short) story which I got free.

Flash Gold was fairly good. Follows the story of Kali, as she prepares a mechanical sledge for a dograce, and Cedar who accompanies her. It tells the story of the race, and that's about it.
It kinda left me wanting to read more, so I guess I'll be getting the next couple in the series :)
Fast paced (it would have to be), fairly cool characters, the world was decently explained, provided you knew that everything ran by steam, and yeah. Pretty good book
