I made it 60 pages in...I couldn't do it. I'm sorry. Listen, there is a time and place for swearing and it just didn't belong that many times in the first 2 chapters. Also, the insta-boys appearing? Maybe the main character was cast wrong, but this book just couldn't get me to like it.

dark fast-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? It's complicated
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

Too many curse words for me. Though, the plot moved at a fast pace and I really did want to get to the bottom of what is going on. It is written where there could be others after it. It seems to take a stand against addiction and religious zealots. Some very weird stuff in here but it did help to up the creepy factor which is why we all read spooky books.
There was a little bit of everything in here. I felt there were lots of loose ends though and would have felt better if I knew there was a sequel and if she would stop cursing worse than a sailor.

It was an okay novel. The flipping of the POV caused me to get lost a few times. So the moments that were supposed to have the most impact didn't. Instead, I was able to predict most of what was going to happen as the book was moving along. I wouldn't recommend it, but it was a decent story, nonetheless.

Perhaps if I hadn't just read The Serpent King, I would give this book a higher rating. The fathers in both books were religious fanatics and made life miserable for their children.
Jen seemed very isolated from the people who could help her.
I wonder how many students have to go through difficult times without parental support. I wonder how many are in class with me and I don't know it.
I would recommend this book to students who like horror.

I can see why experienced readers didn’t enjoy the story as much but for beginners I feel like it’d be a good start. It is predictable and left me with a few questions but I would recommend to read this book if you want to read something short
