Best book I've read in a long, long time. Daniel Mason weaves his stories together with a long view, and his mastery of voice and prose is spellbinding. There is such a sense of place in this book too. Highly recommended

i was a little torn between 4.5 and 5 stars, but i'm now settling comfortably with a full 5.
one grand story told through various shorts, poems, and such. incredibly well written. this is my first time reading anything by daniel mason. i was struck by his ability to not only connect so many different stories across a great span of time, but also his ability to take on so many different voices, each one unique and fitting the time period, while maintaining a rich depth and detail that is so hard to find nowadays. his descriptions of nature are beautiful and immersive, but not bogged down or too much. the cast feels fully flushed and known. it was a real joy to read.
i read a library copy, but will eventually add a permanent copy to my own little collection. i look forward to revisiting this one in the future.
