The amount of times that the characters made me want to throw the book across the room or tear up should tell you how invested I was and how well written they are.
If you enjoy a good hearty fantasy with amazingly fleshed out characters from sea serpents, to pirate captains, mad ships, and pre-teens (Malta you personally gave me a migraine) - give this one a go.
Btw. Wintrow is the one and only. My boy.
You’ll understand :)

A lot of the reviews I’ve read promise some really amazing character development in this trilogy. I certainly hope that’s the case, because nearly everyone in this book was annoying most of the time, if not all of it. My attachment to the characters was what kept me going through the Farseer trilogy when things were slow - I had a hell of a time finding the same fondness to keep me going through this book, until towards the end. If I hadn’t read good reviews stating how amazing the character growth is over the course of the trilogy, I would be skipping ahead to the next part of the series, and I may even have DNF’d this book before I got to the end (which was actually quite good.) I’m going to give this trilogy the benefit of the doubt and go on to the next one.
