This is an older book.  I really enjoyed Fever in the Heartland, so when I saw this in our school library discard pile, I picked it up.  It was excellent.  Once again he shares the history through personal stories.  I made connections to both Prairie Reunion and Four Winds as well as some of the documentaries I’ve seen.  If you have any interest in learning more about this time period I would definitely recommend it.

I'd give this 3.5 stars. It was a fascinating book but my attention span wouldn't hold so it took awhile to read. I do highly recommend this book, though.

Colonization, capitalism, and the U.S. government having to back track an american story as old as time.
This book had a lot of highs and lows for me. I really didn't enjoy the imagined experience that is most of this book. But I will say while that is one of my biggest pet peeves in nonfiction , this book did it better than I've seen it done before. And I did learn so much so I kinda let it go. This book was heart breaking and ever so relevant with the climate crisis looming over us.

It seems a bit long, but enjoyed the story.

3 stars

The Dust Bowl was one of my special interests as a child so this book was right up my alley. But even this was quite dense for me. It tells the story of real human suffering and the complex intertwining of politics and loyalty to the land and historical context. However, as a result of being comprehensive it is quite a lot to tackle. I don't think it was bad per say, I learned a lot and it was very detailed. I just don't know if it was worth it for the amount of detail that was included. Great audiobook listen but would not have survived reading a hard copy of this.
