It's always difficult to rate a book positively when it deals with such horrific subjects. I have read many books set during the holocaust, and none are easy. I know there's been some controversy on historical accuracy, but I read this book as fiction, so don't mind if the truth isn't 100% represented, or that it was a love story with a backdrop of suffering and death. I found Lale's story to be one of ingenuity, luck, grit, and survival. I was rooting for him, Gita, and all their friends. My heart broke when theirs did, at the losses and pain they suffered. There were a few parts that seemed too skimmed over, and for all the drama of the camps and escape, the ending seemed to be too tidy and rushed. Though I do love a happy ending, I wanted a bit more to it. I thought the narrator did an excellent job.

7/10. Not my typical kind of book, but very well-written and very compelling story. Would recommend.
