It seems like all these later books, some way or other, are about dealing with prejudice. This was new, and sad, because there was just no reason to hope. But then things got better, partly because the right person smacked some heads together, but mostly because the right women gave them a chance and then pulled the right strings to then change the world.
And it’s over now. The City Watch books. They really were about Vimes - him and his story about trying to do good when you just want to lose it all the time, the balance of work and home, and the “who watches the watchman?”
I feel let down though. You found out from another book that Carrot and Augna end up living together, but you never know if they get married, if they have kids - and they were barely in this book at all, and now it’s done and I’ll just have to fill in the details myself. Like how that conversation happened, is there a dog door built in the back, does she sleep in a basket next to the bed on her bad night or do they just keep the curtains drawn or do they have just a big basket? Why HAVEN’T they gotten married? What’s going on?!? And now I’ll never know.

Such a hard review to write. It isn't Discworld as I know it, Pratchett's illness makes sure of that. Sam Vimes is freer than ever and grappling with his demons to make a great wrong right, but his relation with Willikins is much freer like several books of developmenttolled into one. Cheery Fred and Nobby all jerk forwards in their expressiveness, and poor Havelock Vetinari is unraveling - this the man who used to read sheet music to avoid its elegance being sullied by musicians... Some of the words are haunting and I wonder how much of the urgency and emotion are a glimpse into the author's turmoil: "he wondered if one day that darkness would break out and claim its heritage, and he wouldn’t know … the brakes and chains and doors and locks in his head would have vanished and he wouldn’t know"

I liked it I didn’t love it.
This book is a tale about Sam Vimes, a man experiencing going on a vacation in the country for the first time in his life after being a Commander of the Night Watch aka a very successful cop in what seemed to be a very stinky and crime ridden city, While his 6 year old sons roams the countryside in search of as many different types of animal poop as possible,Sam is roaming for crime. This man is fundamentally suspicious of the peace and tranquility of the countryside and its inhabitants (“This is Masher…His father was a wild boar, his mother was surprised.”
