Not my favorite Watch book but still a fine read. Nice to see Willikins with a larger role, and completely off the rails as Vimes' backup without the rest of the Watch present. Maybe not the best book for the series to end on, but I'm sure the Alzheimer's was also taking its toll at this point.
The final book in the City Watch series. I feel a bit heartbroken, to be honest. No more stories of Vimes and all the other fantastic Watch characters. I especially loved all the little asides focussing on the other watchmen/women/vampire/troll/etc. That's where the real charm and appeal lies for me in this series.
On to the next Discworld series!
On to the next Discworld series!
The upper classes, racism, slavery, narcotic smuggling, murder, a police commander who is possessed by a demon, police officers who can run up your trouser leg, walk through a wall, change into a wolf, headbut you in the naughty bits, or check your accounts. Oh and child's obsession with poo. What's not to love?
Definitely a dip in quality/humour from previous Pratchett, sadly. They've been trending less funny, but any "funny" bits in this were pretty much copy-pasted from past books (some of them multiple times -- it was really repetitive). The old absurdist feel is mostly gone; that just leaves you with a broadly-drawn allegory and a self-indulgently bitter protagonist.
