I read this book for the first time over 15 years ago, but I didn't quite remember it until I started it again. Sam Vimes remains an absolute treasure and I would like to, once again, put forth Lord Vetinari as a candidate for Ruler of the World, if we can't, regretfully, have Overlord Karellen do it.

How Pratchett managed to write incredibly funny books about racism, class and policing I will never understand, but I have made my peace with eventually running out of Discworld books I haven't read. I can always re-read them.

Commander Sam Vines goes on holiday to his wife's family estate and yet again turns the world on its head.
Young Sam is a joy in this story with his delighted investigations of everything, especially poo.

Vimes uses the word 'shanghaied' in this book, confirming the fact that China exists on the Discworld
