I Hated You First

Very cute friends/brothers best friend to lovers. No spice just a really cute romance story.

randomly bought this as an audiobook on chirp for $0.99 without really knowing much about it. it's technically labeled as new adult romance, but there it's even more censored than a YA fade to black.

for an enemies to lovers romcom, i had decent expectations, but this just didn't live up. the only real basis for the two main characters being "enemies" is that the MMC is her brother's best friend, and they always pick on each other. that being said, there is a HUGE different between picking on someone and being enemies, and these two were definitely not enemies.

also, the characters read as very juvenile to me, which i really didn't like in a supposedly new adult romcom. her dad enlists the MMC help in breaking the FMC and her boyfriend up because she's too young to be in a serious relationship and the guy isn't good enough for him. the FMC is a grown woman with her own house, and i was just so annoyed by the dad acting like she was a teenager living under his roof. my own dad wasn't even that protective of me as a teenager?

all in all, this just wasn't for me.

I adored Clay & Lauren’s relationship throughout this whole book. The slow burn pace was well done and kept my attention. They had such cute banter and I could definitely feel the chemistry between them. It is a clean romance with zero spice.

I did feel like there should’ve been one or two more chapters at the end to see their relationship develop a bit more, but I didn’t mind the ending.

The side characters were excellent and added just enough to the plot but didn’t distract. Lauren’s family was a bit messy but I found it refreshing and relatable at times. Her dad was a bit too overprotective, but I liked that she stood her ground.

Overall, this book was sweet, easy to read and one of my favourites of the year. I’d highly recommend this to anyone.

It was really good, just not perfect, and this is why:
I love a good enemy to lovers with a slow burn, like I'm a sucker for this two tropes. Not in love with the sister's bestfriend one, but this one very well described and structured. I only have concerns as for the ending that was really too rushed. I wished the story was at least 30 pages longer to deal with the final bomb in more than just a scene. Overall a nice book to read just for relax.

Rachel John is a new-to-me author recommended by @probablybookinit and I am so glad I followed up on this author recommendation! I read this book on a flight across the country and have never been so entertained while flying!

Clay and Lauren’s forbidden romance is every romcom lover’s dream! I loved Lauren’s intense family. I wouldn’t want to live it in reality, but thoroughly enjoyed reading about it! Laugh out loud antics for sure! The writing flowed well and had no lulls. The inner dialogue was probably my favorite aspect of this book. I loved all the things they thought, but didn’t dare say out loud. Then the flirtations they said out loud was spectacularly executed. I’m still chuckling over this book.

If you’re looking for a cute pick-me-up, look no further! This book releases January 21 and is 100% loveable! I can’t wait to add more books from this author to my library!!

Thanks to the author for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

This off limits, best friend trope was laugh out loud funny, loved the dial pov and detail. Loved clay and Lauren’s characters, Lauren’s family was great, especially the dad (asking clay to check up on Lauren’s dates)!

The title is very misleading. They never hated each other or even outwardly hated each other. This book should be called ‘I felt neutral towards you first’.

2.5 stars.
It was an okay read, thought it would be a quick one to power through over the break. It actually ended up taking a lot longer to read than I thought though.
Clay and Lauren were cute, the family element was interesting.
The other brother who had nothing to do with the company was a bit of a non event.
Brothers best friend isn't a favourite trope of mine. There wasn't a lot of tension between the main characters really, it was more bickering in my thoughts. Maybe I missed something though.
