I was able to stop listening to this audiobook for several weeks but once I figured out where the story was possibly going, I couldn't stop. Yes, it is a lot like TFIOS where two kids are battling cancer but the depths of their friendship to keep one another from breaking is where this story shines.

Let’s start off by addressing the elephant in the room: yes, Zac & Mia is a YA book about teens with cancer. Yes, there’s been a mega popular book-turned-movie about cancer teens in recent memory. But Zac and Mia is not that book. It’s not trying to be that book. And other than featuring a teenage boy and girl with cancer, it’s nothing like that book.
Here’s what Zac & Mia is: a book about friendship, overcoming odds, living your best life, and having belief in others even when you find it hard to believe in yourself. That makes the book sound saccharine, but that couldn’t be further from the truth: it’s modern, youthful, sometimes sarcastic. It’s funny at times, heart wrenching at others, but it always feels genuine. It’s also refreshingly devoid of the insta-love that seems to permeate nearly every YA novel these days. And it was a completely satisfying, enjoyable read that left me appreciating my life just a little more (and also left me wanting to read everything ever written by A.J. Betts). Recommended to nearly everyone.
