This book went an unexpected direction. At the end of the last book Senlin gets his airship and crew, so I suppose I shouldn't have been so surprised this book was more swashbuckly.
I really did enjoy this book but its so very different from the first it took me awhile to get used to. The fierce pace is gone. And knowing this is book 2 of 4 bums me out in a way because things aren't getting resolved anytime soon. The story is going to go farther and farther afield. On the one hand the author is just so good at new and interesting places and things to see so its a fun ride at least. On the other, though, the intense yearning to find his wife is almost gone. I'm eager to see what happens next, but still surprised the series is as long as it is.
The second half is more fun than the first. It felt like it took awhile to see where the story was really going. I'm still so impressed at the exotic and fun places and people the author introduces in seemingly almost every chapter. The mystery with the Sphinx is the real meat to chew on here and it doesn't disappoint.

I didn't enjoy it as much as the last one, I think in large part because of the POV switching -- too often and fleeting. Near the end, when we spend large chunks with different characters, I much prefer it. I think the beginning was also a lil aimless, but the tone has changed and the purpose is less clear. But despite all that, I was enraptured again by the end. I just have faith that the world that's being built has been thought through, and I'm excited to read the third!

I’m just sad I’m half way done, I don’t want this series to end. What started as a filler series between other book series turned into an obsession. Bancroft is one of my new favorite authors, in my view, he is as good a writer in prose and plotting as even Brandon Sanderson.
