An innovative and engaging poetry collection about Chicago as seen through ordinary BIPOC eyes.

I love poetry that makes me want to learn more about a subject - which is exactly what this book did. I found myself doing further research on the people and events he highlighted in his poems. Coval told the mostly ignored stories of the city he calls home, showing how history shaped it and made it what it is today; a vibrant, diverse, and idiosyncratic city. A powerful collection.

An electrifying history of Chicago!  It showcases the protests, shootings, and music that's made this city.  It's not all pleasant, but in the end it's made me happy to call myself a Chicagoan!

I’m from the Chicago area and was taught a very polished history of the U.S.A. in school as a kid. This book of poetry is filled with so much truth. And Kevin is a creative leader, activist, poet and awesome person who works with kids and helps them uncover their creativity by empowering them to find (and use) their voice. He mentored Chance the Rapper, who also wrote an awesome intro for this book. Really loved this one!

As a non-native Chicagoan, I really liked learning some more history of the place and the people through these poems.
