Lazy, offensive, hurtful: The protagonist is fat because she constantly crams Twinkies down her face.
Lazy, offensive, unrealistic, and hurtful: The protagonist loses weight and her whole life changes!
Sickening: Her brother rapes someone and gets away with it.
This book is horrible. It's not edgy, it's not groundbreaking. It's just terrible. Between this and the less-but-still-awful "Vegan Virgin Valentine", I give up on Carolyn Mackler. Ugh.

"Does 'doing exactly what I want' mean not thinking about other people's feelings? Because that's just not the kind of person I am.
Maybe it can mean whatever I want it to mean, like taking care of myself and not letting people walk all over me.
Yes, that's much more like it."

Graphic: Body shaming
Moderate: Eating disorder, Rape, Self harm, Sexual assault
If I were that fat, I'd kill myself.
This book is banned from all school libraries, I don't think that needs to be done. This book deals with a lot of matters that we need to discuss with teens. I liked how these issues were covered in a light way rather than making them seem too serious.
Issues like obesity, eating disorder, date rape, self harm, self esteem and family expectations are dealt here. I just wanted some of these to be discussed in more depth specially date rape and anorexia.
It is about Virginia Shreves, her friends and family. Virginia is an overweight girl whose family is just picture perfect. It is about how she find herself between all the chaos of her family and school life.
The Model Brewster Student is a lean,mean,stair-climbing machine.
I loved how the main character grew through the book. I read it too long ago for much detail, but in the beginning, she was believing anything anybody said negative about her body, and by the end, she was telling off her dad for commenting on stuff he had no right to.
