Sometimes you can do everything right and things will still go wrong. The key is to never stop doing right.
This is an incredible YA dystopia. Our main character, Starr, lives in a world where people are discriminated against due to their skin color and poverty level. In this world, people can be shot on the street with no repercussions. Not only are people allowed to get away with it, but the young men and women who are killed are then vilified by the upper class, and the news media. When the people of this world protest against their oppressors, military action is taken, including armored tanks to enforce curfew.
What a horrible world that would be to live in. So glad this is dystopia, and definitely not anything actually happening in the world.
This book is amazing. I don't want to admit the number of times I cried. Or how deeply the rage set in.
Even among all the darkness and pain, there is so much light in this book. Starr is an amazing character, and her time with her family is so fun, and lovely. She is a real, fleshed out person. And you're with her through this entire ordeal. You feel what she feels, from pain to rage to light.
I wanted to wrap her in a warm blanket and feed her soup. I love her so much.
This is such an important topic, and Angie Thomas kicks its ass. This needs to be required reading. It's easy. Kids who loved The Hunger Games will be all over this.

This book uses the young adult format to convey a timely and powerful story. The main character was realistic and beautifully written, and I found myself crying a few times in the middle when the enormity of what Starr was going through overwhelmed me.
Spoiler
It did feel that it wrapped up a little too simply: all the storylines finished at the same time, with a neat little bow on them. Everyone got the happiest ending that they could, but this is young adult and not adult so it didn't feel too out of place.unworthy96's review against another edition

This is a powerful book. You know how Harry Potter characters have a way of being deep enough to encapsulate the human condition in a way that is appropriate for a YA audience? That but about Black Lives Matter. You should read it.

Every single person needs to read this book.
Everything about it is thought-provoking and so so real. As someone that can never truly understand the hate that some people go through, this book hurt me so hard and it only gave me just a glimpse. I can never have enough words to explain the things this book made me feel, just that I think everyone needs to read it and try and imagine if this world was their life.
This book still surprised me too, the fact that Chris stayed there through it all, really made me happy that he wasn’t just made the bad guy because he was white. The fact that he stood up and protested and supported (tried to support best he could) Starr, shows that not everyone is inclined to act like the cop, and Hailey.
Starr is amazing and strong and so inspiring. The Carter family is strong and made me want to be a part of it even through the bad times. This book truly gave you a deeper look into how some people live their lives, and showed you that there is always more below the surface that everyone should make it a mission to be mindful of. And not just in similar circumstances, but everyone should always keep on their mind that people get treated differently all over the world, and people are always going through so much more then you could ever know.
This book moved me and I absolutely loved it.

With this book I decided to do this one difference. I usually read a book and then if there's a movie out or coming out I watch it after. This almost always late to me being disappointed in the movie. I did it backwards this time. I loved the movie and loved the book. The movie stayed pretty true to the book and even though I knew what was going to happen the book was still able to make me feel everything I felt while watching the movie. Great read!
