September 2018: Reread with the audiobook in preperation for the movie. still just as power now as the day I first read it.

March 2017: This book had high praises before it's release and I can say it's well worth it. At times, this book made me cry without me knowing I was crying; it's definitely an important read.

Starr Carters parents have done everything they can to protect her from the gang torn neighbor hood she lives in. They love their community, but know that going to a private high school out of the neighbor hood is what's best for their children. Spring break comes and Starr has the opportunity to catch up with those she usually doesn't get to see at school. Everything changes that night, as she sees her childhood best friend get fatally shot by a police officer. Facing pressure from both sides of her life Starr has to find her voice and stand for what's right.

Tupacs message rings true through Angie Thomas' novel, The Hate U Give reminds us all of what life is like on the other side of tragedy that occurs in communities every day. Provoking young people to think and question those around them and the injustices that occur through Starr carter is a humbling and touching story.

I initially put this down, as it has a lot more strong language than I usually read. I ended up going back to it and am glad I did. There is a fair amount of language, but it seemed very realistic to the characters. This is the story of a teenage girl who is the only witness of the shooting of her childhood friend by a policeman on a routine pullover. The book covers a range of timely cultural issues in a realistic way and is also a compelling story.

Please-read this. It is necessary reading in today’s atmosphere. It is powerful in it’s simplicity. I was drawn in immediately and could not put it down until it was done.
The characters are all flawed but perfect in their own individuality. As a middle aged, privileged white woman I assumed I knew what this book was going to read like. I couldn’t be more wrong. It is a story that is profoundly moving in on many levels. I could completely relate to the protagonist’ parents.
Love. Love. Love.
